Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples

Brief Program Description

EFT for Couples is a program designed to encourage people toidentify and discuss their emotions and feelings in an effort to improvemarital satisfaction. In EFT, cycles of interaction are identified and trackedwhile the experience of each partner is identified for each step of the cycle.The therapist reframes the problem and helps each partner accept his or her ownemotional response as well as that of his or her partner. Through this process,partners begin to make new requests of each other and to generate new solutionsto their presenting problem, which results in the old cycle being disrupted anda new, more adaptive cycle initiated.

Program Strategies

EFT is a nine-step process whereby a trained therapist helps thecouples to:

  1. Delineate conflict issues in the struggle between them
  2. Identify the negative interaction style
  3. Access feelings underlying interactional positions
  4. Reframe the problems in terms of underlying feelings
  5. Promote identification with disowned needs and aspects of self
  6. Promote self-acceptance in each partner
  7. Facilitate the expression of needs and wants to restructure the interaction based on new understandings
  8. Establish the emergence of new solutions
  9. Consolidate the new positions.

Implementation Timeline

EFT is delivered in eight 50-minute weekly sessions. Therapistsare required to attend 12 hours of training, using the EFT treatment manual asa required resource.

Outcomes

The program has been tested with married couples experiencingproblems in their marriages. Couples in the EFT group had significantly higherlevels of marital satisfaction after 8 weeks of therapy compared with couplesin the wait-list control group.
